Hey all

anyone have any suggestions for good gyms in the area? I tried the Crossfit bootcamp but i don't think it is for me. I would prefer a traditional gym like a mayfair or extreme fitness or something like that.

anyone a member somewhere? are rates reasonable?

I go to System Fitness at Queen and Kingston Road. Prices aren't bad and its a decent gym. Good hours, good range of equipment and its not super busy so you rarely wait for a machine. There's s a streetcar stop right in front of the place, so its easy to get to by TTC, or if you drive, they have a deal with the parking lot on Eastern (behind the move theatre and off-track betting site) - members can park free if going to the gym.
I went by Mayfair club today. nice gym and facility but the $900 initiation fee is a bit steep....
I go to Hotflex Fitness on Carlaw between Queen and Dundas. It's a small gym, but it's not very busy. They do offer some classes (spinning, boxing, etc) but it's extra $$. Anyway, I like it. My one complaint would be that sometimes it's hot. I picked it 'cause it's walking distance and the closest one to my house.
$50/month.
I go to the Mayfair,

Not cheap, but a nice club. Tons of classes, good facilities and no waiting for machines ever.

Wacky managment, though. I recently paid $75 just to bring my sister and her family to try out a class and see if they wanted to join. I am paying to do their sales work for them. My sister didn't sign when she heard this, and I can't say that I blame her.
Hotflex is a 2 minute walk from my place which is great. i was a bit skeptical about the size of the place but i will go check it out. For some reason some of the gyms i have looked at don't open till 7 or 7:30am which kills me going before work.
I just got a membership at the new GoodLife at Coxwell and Gerrard. Rates were reasonable if you got a corporate plan. I used to do an awesome boot camp, but I didn't want to pay the 130 bucks a month so I opted for a 50 per month option at this gym. What I like is that absolutely everything is new at that gym, and that you can go to other Goodlife locations if you are out of Town. The washrooms have a sauna and they have great spinning and yoga class that is included with your membership. I wish is was closer to my house, but its worth the bike/drive over in my opinion. Oh, and you can lock you bike up inside of the gym, they have a rack in front of the main desk when you walk in.
i've been curious about them... I've heard some other people with difficulties dealing with management too. what sort of price range are the membership fees? ridiculously long contracts too?
any comments on "Training Room"? It's the closest to where I live.
Training room is definitely no frills but adequate. They have really good Yoga classes there. I negotiated a really good deal for $30/month there. Tell them want you want to pay and be prepared to walk.
thanks Bob. Much appreciated. I'll give them a call.
I actually ended up joining Extreme at Pape and Danforth. I checked out a few others but a lot did not have very good hours (couldn't go before work) and extreme is open 5am-12pm. Not a bad deal, 76/month and first 4 months free.
System Fitness is fantastic- it's clean, never too busy, reasonably priced and fantastic facilities with a wide range of machines as well as free fitness classes (including Yoga, Spinning and Pilates if you're into that).

Looked at the Training Room and didn't like the dark and a bit gloomy atmosphere. Also didn't seem nearly as new and clean as System Fitness and I wouldn't want to walk home from there at night. System Fitness is on the street car line and for when I'm lazy they have ample parking in the lot across the street for free.

Highly recommend it, the staff are friendly, helpful and they keep the place running smoothly and cleanly!
