Growing ever frustrated with the loud drunks and bass-filled music flowing from the Curzon bar three nights a week or more. I can't have my windows open and even so the noise penetrates my house. I have a baby in the house as well, as well as a wife who has insomnia issues as it is. I've sent them emails to no avail, a promised "Respect the neighbors" sign never appeared last summer. Now here we are again with no respect. I understand that Stratengers and Celi Cottage both close their patios at 11 pm so as not to disrupt the neighborhood. I'm not sure how the Curzon gets away with it.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to force them to close their patio at 11 and at the very least pretend that they exist in a residential neighborhood and not a club district?

I also live on Curzon and when they first applied for a permit for the patio a few years ago it was on the condition that the patio be closed by 11pm. I think this is actually a city by-law for any establishments located within/close to a residential neighbourhood.
I would recommend contacting Paula Fletcher, our City Councillor. She should be able to point you in the right direction for making a formal complaint.
best of luck,
Laura

My name is J.J. Hope and I am the manager at The Curzon. I have managed there since last November so I was unaware of the "Respect the neighbors" sign but I believe we have spoken regarding this situation in the past and Nolin contacted me this morning regarding your post. From now on our patio will close at 10 pm in order to lessen the noise for you and your family. We apologize again to you and your family. If you do have anymore problems with the noise please do not hesitate to call me at (416) 850-3650.
Sorry again,
Sincerely,
J.J. Hope

Permalink Reply by Jeff Jurmain on June 20, 2012 at 10:42am Hi J.J., thanks for your response, I really appreciate it. I don't want to come off as a party-pooper and I love supporting local businesses, but it's just been a sore spot for some time. Of course I understand that living near a major street like Queen will have certain noise factors and I would never presume silence in the neighborhood. Closing the patio at 10 would be amazing, and probably for my other neighbors who keep to themselves (not you, Laura!) but likely share my view.

Permalink Reply by justin jason hope on June 20, 2012 at 2:55pm You are very welcome Jeff. I have also advised the entire staff of the closing time as I am not there every night. I hope there is less noise for you, your family and your neighbours. Please call me if there are any further problems.
JJ
So how's it going with the noise from the Curzon patio since this promise from the manager? I found it interesting because when Ceili Cottage applied to the AGCO two years ago to expand their patio hours and capacity they cited other bars including the Curzon as being open til 11, to make their case for the same. Mind you, they are not tucked right into a residential street.
Permalink Reply by Jeff Jurmain on June 26, 2012 at 11:56am I'd say closing the east-side patio at 10 has cut the noise by half, which I am thankful for. There is a second patio in back with a big fence that stays open and the nature of our street is unfortunately not rich with trees like some others so noise bounces around and cuts through the air easily. And insulation must not have been a prime concern in east york as my thin walls and the Curzon's thin walls are no match for bass, which seeps through. What can you do
Permalink Reply by justin jason hope on June 26, 2012 at 4:08pm Hi again Jeff,
I am glad that the noise has been cut in half. However, I took a walk down the street on Saturday night in order to hear the noise for myself and I agree that even with our doors closed, the levels are unacceptable. As a result, I have changed dj's on both Friday and Saturday nights to one who will play less bass-filled music. I will also monitor the noise during the night by walking down the street with the dj as he starts playing his music so that he knows what is acceptable volume-wise and what is not acceptable.
I apologize again, but I do believe that this will be the last time I will have to. Please get back to me after this weekend if you have the time to do so, either by phone or on here, to let me know how we did.
Sincerely,
J.J. Hope
Permalink Reply by Allie on June 27, 2012 at 12:32pm J.J.Hope, you should give lessons to businesses on how to manage their online presence. You seem to have responded to the community concern in a way that has made a difference. I hope the community in turn rewards you with more business. I know I will be more inclined to stop in.
