Hi folks.

Just curious, is there a BIA forming? Not that the hood needs it, but I was just wondering if there's any point in starting one to have a collective effort on augmenting this place. I heard there was one being formed, but wanted to hear from the crowd.

Cheers

You may also want to speak to the owner of Atelier Jewellery. She was very active, if not the president of the beaches BIA I believe and would likely be very interested in helping out now that she has a store that would fall within the Leslieville BIA should one be created.

We should put todays meeting on hold and schedule something in early spring.

First lets advertise the BIA meeting within the community so that we can get many stakeholders involved and find out the current situation.

We can advertise vis twitter, Lesliviller etc.

Thoughts?

Date proposal?

This thread seems to date back a couple of years and it's obvious people have tried to start this BIA a few times. I think it's important that a couple of people take charge and develop a strategy, plan...something just to get people on board. I think that we should meet tonight and discuss the process and get the ball rolling that way. Once we have a couple committed people, we can go out there and gain some traction. I can ask a friend of mine who is an active member of the Beach's BIA to join us to help get started.

If you're still willing to meet I'll be there at 7pm. My cell is 416-434-1511 can call when you arrive to identify me. by my pic is there on my profile so I'm easy to spot.

I'm in, who else? Please confirm by 5pm today so we can get the #'s worked out (seating etc...)

I'm  going to interject at this point,  there is already a group of business owners working to attempt to get a BIA  going.  There have been a discussions  and meetings already.  We are working cautiously and carefully and in small numbers at this point in an effort to actually see something happen this time.  Because of the numerous attempts,  at both a BIA and numerous business associations  we are keeping things lowkey and attempting to work to meet the goals of everyone that would be involved.  Please be patient, we have been at this for a long number of months, and have made some great progress.  Anyone who knows the history of this will know that slow and steady  is the way to go.  When there is more information to share with the public at large  we will do so. Thank You Everyone for your understanding and patience.

ok sounds good!!

please let us know if you need any help

and/or

when you have some significant progress

It is a shame that Leslieville does not have a BIA yet...it would be a great thing for this community of business owners.

What exactly do you think having a BIA would achieve...planters? Are you happy with what other BIA's have achieved. What is amazing about Leslieville is the organic way it has developed. Why are we going to change that dynamic now? I dont see the benefits!
Asking the Beaches BIA for help is laughable...retail in the Beach is terrible. No plan, no organization. Wow!

Yes, planters are part of it. There are of course a great many other things a BIA brings to the area. I'm not sure if you were here for the business association that existed a few years ago but it was fairly active in the area before it disbanded. From the tone of your post though you seem pretty negative towards BIA's in general so I won't go into more detail.

If you would like more information on BIA's the city website can provide you with more details.

I'll toss in my two cents,

The first place I would go when thinking of starting a BIA would be TABIA, Toronto Association of BIA. TABIA staff can help to better understand the benefits and challenges that operating within a BIA can bring. I can tell you that running a BIA is not cheap. I think perhaps what we may want is an organized community group with a set of goals, and a plan to achieve them. I am more than happy to volunteer my time and expertise in running an association. You can reach me on caullyn@gmail.com.

Cheers, and good luck!

I agree that retail in the Beach is terrible...but I seriously doubt the BIA there plays any role in that, or can really fix it in any way.

Personally I think planters would be a huge improvement to Leslieville.

I think that planters are a part of it but really what I would hope to see is a move to a more cohesive identification of the neighbourhood in look and feel.  This is through the planters but also unique Leslieville street signage, seasonal banners on the street lights, etc.  It shows a sense of pride and I know that when I visit other neighbourhoods that have these elements, as an outsider I feel the neighbourhood is vibrant.

While this secret group of potential BIA'ers are plugging away at it, come join our Leslieville Small Business Association group on Facebook. We're not a BIA, nor do we have any interest in being a BIA. We're simply a group of local business owners looking to meet other like minded locals and do some networking. Here's our official Facebook Page. All communications and announcements will be presented here: https://www.facebook.com/LeslievilleSBA

There will be food and drink and loads of networking at our 2nd event. Please log in for more details.
