Hi - I read a few weeks back about a guy knocking doors asking for something. Can't recall exactly that story, but I did meet someone today who took me in. A guy knocked on my door this afternoon saying his son had filled up his van with gas instead of diesel and needed to flush the lines...his wife was at work, he didn't have his debit/cards with him etc. Then he told me he lived a few doors down. He's woken me up from a nap so I was reeled in by his story and gave him $20. I then realized the house he said he lived in was a house I know the owners of! Of course in my 'woken up' state it didn't hit me til later. Beware of a guy knocking on your door with this story! Hit the Greenwood/Queen area today.

Wow, thieves are ballsy.
Just as a shout out to the hood and to ask a favour.

The water heater people are back and quite rude. Two short "girls" in their twenties rang my bell then went next door. They were ringing two doors at once, then expected you to wait for them. They obviously were never taught to read, and are wearing identification for GSW water heaters. They do not work for the company as I just got off the phone with them and they do not do retail, nor do they go door to door, obviously.

In any case, I told them to go P*#%@# and I called the cops. A cop came by, told me to do the things I've been doing for months.

If anybody can get their proper ID or a phone number, or how to contact them, I'd love to hear it. I was fuming at the time and those two were obviously too rude to be able to think straight. One of them actually thought I owed them an apology for acting like that. They trespassed, rang my bell, said "we're just doing our job". I told them their job has nothing to do with trespassing and bothering people, and I slammed the door. They then rang it again and demanded an apology. I gave them something different.

How that is not harassment, I don't know, but the cop said he couldn't do anything. They conveniently left the neighbourhood when they saw me on the phone. The officer said they do that a lot.

Both the officer and the GSW Customer Service person agreed with me that it is quite rude and offensive. I emailed Liz West to say that the City needs safety at our own front doors and to not be bothered by non-legitimate jerks that invade people's homes in order to push questionable business. I also know she is here and that there is a thread on how people are scared to answer their doors because of this nonsense. Nothing heard back yet.

Just so that you know. They are not GSW, so get their information and I will give them a shout.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
I would never answer the door at 2am.

I seem to recall another thread a few months ago about a guy knocking on doors during the night. Not sure if this is the same guy as above but we got a knock at almost 2am last night (Queen/Broadview) from a man (40s, black hair with a bit of grey, glasses, clean cut, Adidas shirt) claiming to live a few houses down from us (he doesn't) with the typical story that his car broke down out on Greenwood and it's filled with alcohol so he can't leave it overnight. He asked my husband for $20 and when he said no, he asked if he could go to the bank for him. Again, no. He left a few minutes later and we called the police.

He wasn't menacing and stood away from the door (didn't try to look inside). I'm sure he was perhaps startled by our very loud barking dog but he was persistent. He said he chose our house because we still had some lights on at that time.

VERY scary. If he does this to anyone else, please call the police.
he owes me $5....this is a con as old as the neighborhood...
I have to admit, I'm one of those that simply never answers the door anymore. When it comes to deliveries, I wait for the first "we missed you" notice so I know to answer for them the following day.
i will still answer my door. i`m pretty new in the hood - just over a year - but i have had 2 instances where my neighbours needed my help, and i was happy to oblige. i will NOT open our door to anyone i don`t know and will only look through the side window to talk to anyone on my porch, but i still answer if it`s a reasonable hour. Having very young children, there are times when a note NOT to ring the bell, baby is sleeping is up`, and I`ve never had anyone ring. I would recommend that people who don`t want solicitors should try the baby sleeping note as it`s the one reason people will respect your need for peace. as far as this scam goes, creeps will always find a way to prey on the kindness of others. it`s sickening.

Water heater guys are around again... hitting Caroline Avenue today. The fellow, when I told him that I know about their scam and am not interested, told me that there will be more people knocking at my door until "everyone in the neighbourhood is upgraded." Wow, the blatant lies.
