Do not give to anyone asking for a donation to a basketball team trip to Brooklyn!

Hello

This evening a young man knocked on my door raising money for the "Maserk Community Centre" basketball league trip to a tournament in Brooklyn NY.  On his pledge sheet (which contains spelling errors - I should have known), it lists Dave Matthews as his coach and a  phone number.  I gave the boy $20, and after closing the door called the number right away - it was the boy who answered.  I went back outside to find him and get my money back but he was gone.  Don't fall for this! Just wanted to let you know...

He's doing this in the subway system as well. I told him to give me the website where I could get more information and speak with the coach about the program and he got nervous and backed away stuttering.
I'm so mad at myself!
This sort of thing is really irksome and frustrating because it makes people think twice about giving to legitimate charities like ours.
Damn, I gave to a couple boys last year for this same reason. I really thought I was helping their team get to Brooklyn. Sad to hear this is a scam.
This seems to be getting pretty frequent. I offered the same boy a cheque made out to the community centre, he told me they don't take cheques. On Monday night we had another young man asking for money for his dance troop, he could have been legit, I'll never know. From people asking for gas money to get back to Barrie, numerous charities and kids sports teams, the demands at the door entice me to just ignore the bell. I seek out the giving opportunities, and make my donations through the year, I just don't believe you if you knock on my door.
I agree.  In fact, I wish the legitimate organizations would stop sending door-to-door and street-corner volunteers out to solicit.  Then it would be much easier for everyone to close the door in the face of the scam artists.

We haven't employed those methods because I'm not a fan -- too intrusive.  We prefer to use events to get the word out about us.  The good charities will always be easy to find out about and when it's something local, you can see the work being done first-hand.

The scammers really are ruining it for the rest of us.

I have just had this kid at my door in Boston Avenue, asking for money for basketball trip to Brooklyn. I told him I had already given and he disappeared. But seems he is on his way down through this area.
I completely agree.  Door to door and telephone canvassing are completely out of date (not to mention all the mass mailings...what a complete waste of paper and resources).  These days charities should take advantage of social networking instead.

Hey LMA,

I'm a reporter with Eye Weekly, and a few weeks ago we did a a report on a different door-to-door scammer in Leslieville (which we found through this board.) Saw this and thought we might want to follow up and do a little write-up on this one as well... would you have five minutes to chat via phone tomorrow? Best,

Matthew Halliday

Hi Mathew,

I just saw your post.  If you are still interested in following up, let me know. Thanks.

LMA
