Our street dinner group has almost run out of new Leslieville restaurants to visit. We're holding off on Tomi-Kro and Sauvignon till at least one of us has won the lottery. While we wait for some of the new places to open, we decided to double back to Toast. We haven't been there for almost two years. It's nice to sit by the open window in the summer, and it's a cozy place to be on a cold, rainy night. The menu offers a good choice for carnivores, calorie watchers and vegetarians. Good selection of wines. We ordered bottles, red, white and glasses from the wine list. Except for the skimpy quantity in the glass, it was all good. The food was great - steaks cooked pretty close to as requested, generous portions, tasty.
There were quite a few service issues between our server and the kitchen. Wrong appetizers brought (tasty, but wrong), strange timing on food delivery, substitutions agreed to that didn't show up on the plate but arrived separately halfway through the meal, half our table served, then another table served, then a few more at our table. I suspect some of this had to do with us being a large party and Toast being a small kitchen restaurant with only one server. The food was very good, the service was friendly, but we had a lot of awkward gaps at the table.
They have sticky toffee cake on the dessert menu. Visions of Ceili Cottage's sticky toffee cake danced in my mind, so I ordered it. It was good and I'd order it again, but Ceili Cottage's version is in a totally different and superior universe of sticky toffee cakes. You've been warned.
Cost was reasonable. Half litre of wine, appetizer, main course and dessert were $60 + tip.
Would I go again? Yes. Is there room for improvement? Yes.

hi Nancy!
I was treated (yet another birthday dinner!) to Sauvignon on Thursday night. Was really yummy. They do have a couple of vegetarian options on the menu! And... OMG, the cheesecake. If not for dinner, just go for the cheesecake some time.
My girlfriend and I have tried most of the breakfast places in the area. One day a few weeks ago we tried Toast.

Not so impressed. For a restaurant that calls itself "toast"....the actual toast was soggy and horrible, the eggs were very salty and greasy.

Hopefully dinner is better.
My husband and I have tried to go to Toast twice. And both times they told us they were "running out of food". Seriously.
Thank you for your comments with respect to your visit. We are glad you liked the food, atmosphere and appreciated the service. Your criticisms will certainly be considered! We have recently introduced a very successful seasonally inspired spring/summer menu that is being well received. Our confidence is running high. We hope to see you again.

Best regards,
Tony Barnaby

RE: Running out of food

It's unfortunate but in a place as small as ours and because we like the food we serve to be fresh it happens that we sometimes run out of some menu options by the end of the day.

We are never "out of food".

I've been offered reduced menus a couple of times recently. It's a symptom of a busy day and food costs.

If you care to be more specific (what was the item we were out of for example and what time of day you came in) I can take it up with the server that gave you the information.

Regards,
Tony

Thanks for the response. The seasonal menu sounds good.
