Well our newest restaurant to open is Enoteca Ascari.....with the closing of Toast on Queen and the move of Tomi Kro to Gerrard, I am guessing we needed something to replace them. Well this is the same owners as Table 17 just down the street, and having been there now twice in the past 2 weeks, I have to say I'm favourably impressed. Let's say that in it's early days, I"m giving this place a 4 out of 5 "A"'s rating from me .
The menu is simple, short and sweet ....and i do mean that quite literally. Pasta's are all home made, appetizers delicious (try the potato pie), and the salads done just a bit differently, but worth a try is the sprout salad....excellent. The prices of the food are quite reasonable and their wine selection is excellent, but a little at the higher end. You do need to know about Italian wines as this is the majority of their selection. But the staff will be more than happy to help you make a choice .
And speaking of staff, very friendly and helpful nice to see in a new or old venue. Decor not yet finished apparently as there will be art work representing the car racing background of this restaurant. But currently it's quite nice (at least according to my tastes), simple but well done, nice window space looking onto Queen, nice bistro table , and more importantly an interesting "buzz" in the atmosphere. If you wish to sit at the bar and eat that is also possible which is always an interesting option for socializing. This place is already quite busy so making a reservation would be a must. The nice thing is if you don't have a reservation, leave your name and run across the street to Goods and Provisions for a little tapas and drink while you're waiting for your table. Everyone seems to be doing and supporting to good great restaurants at the same time.
So all I can say this is definitely worth a try.....If there is one thing we can say...no lack of choice along our wonderful Queen Street.
