Friendly Thai

My dinner group ate at Friendly Thai last night. I have eaten there a few times before, when they first opened. I found it to be "OK". If I really wanted Thai food, I'd go the extra mile and get it from Danforth Thai on Danforth east of Coxwell, but someone chose Friendly Thai this month and that's where we went. Initially I was put off by the stupidly high chairs and table. I'm 5 ft tall. I don't like to eat with my legs swinging in the breeze and my purse out of reach on the floor. I find that style of table to be pretentious and unnecessary. Ok, ok, I got over it. I climbed up, my friend came over and pushed my chair in for me. The menu is designed for sharing. There's a good selection of dishes, meat, veggie, fish, and even my fave - coconut rice. My carnivore friends ordered a selection of dishes to share. I was feeling a little disadvantaged as the sole non-meat eater, but I ordered a curry with a side of rice.
Ok, all the whining and complaining stops here. The food is VERY good. The spring rolls were crispy and tasty. My curry was spicy and sweet. Coconut rice is wonderful. My friends loved their pad thai, chicken cashew. The satay dinner was a little bland but not bad. The portions are so generous that I started to question their choice in table size. We had trouble finding places to put everything. Most people had leftovers to take home. It was not too pricey, and considering the quality and the portion size (I'm eating leftovers for lunch now and not sure I can finish it this time either) it's a downright bargain.
In short, Friendly Thai won me back. I'll go again but request a lower table. I'll order in. I'll talk it up to my friends. I'll post a good review.

I question the height of those tables every time I go in there... to work. Thanks for the great review Nancy, It's nice to know that the food there does stack up against some of the more well known Thai joints around. Just from seeing the kitchen and what goes in and out of it all the time, I can vouch that all the places I have worked or seen back kitchens this one is the cleanest, and contains nothing but fresh ingredients (except the coconut milk. that comes in a can.. it would be strange to have that many coconuts in the back room).

What?!? Canned coconut milk!?!? The horror!!!

Glad to hear even the staff are perplexed by the bar tables. Maybe there's hope yet. :)

The place must be rockin' tonight. I tried calling twice to place a takeout order. The first time they picked up and hung up right away, and the second time they didn't even bother answering.

edit - looks like third time's the charm. finally got through. :)
