Boo - I'll miss the smell of bread on my morning jog! But I think the area could use a little sprucing!
I have lived in the area my whole life and seen it go from sketchy to trendy in the last few years. Since it has become trendy, people are packing themselves in to live here. Developers are most interested in condos because they have the most return on investment. In my opinion, if you are going to bring in hundreds of people to a neighbourhood, the infrastructure must be able to support it. Leslieville has not expanded to meet these peoples needs ie extra public transport, food stores, public parks, and I think it is very irresponsible of developers across the city who routinely overpopulate up and coming neighbourhoods. A perfect example: If you go to the Loblaws on Leslie and Lakeshore after noon on Sunday, they are out of everything!
I wouldn't blame the developers. I know in many areas of the city, building permits are tied to developers committing to creating parks, green space, etc. Blame the city for that one. As for public transportation, I think you can also blame the city for not getting its act together. And finally, as for food stores, etc., private enterprise usually helps balance out supply and demand. You can blame our fine councillor Paula Fletcher for rallying the community against a SmartCentre only to turn around and support a TTC streetcar yard a stone's throw from the proposed development site. I really think we were duped on that one.
I would add that the problems at Loblaws have little to do with the gentrifying of the neighborhood and more to do with their own poor distribution system. They had the same problem of empty shelves at their Queens Quay location when I used to live downtown several years ago. Loblaws has been struggling with the "empty shelves" problem for years now. Besides, Price Chopper across the street rarely has empty shelves.
I'd also agree with JK - its not the developers fault - they're in the business of building condos. City planning is not their job. Its up the City to responsibly manage growth and certainly there's lots of questions as to how effectively they do that. Unfortunately, the City has historically been mesmerized by the development fees and taxes paid by these new developments so they just approve them without giving a lot of thought to the impact on the neighborhood sometimes.
That said, I'm not one of those in the "anti-condo" camp. Fact is, the Weston bakery is closing whether we like it or not. I'd rather see that property be developed and be useful than become another decaying eyesore on Eastern Ave., like those empty lots between Carlaw and Leslie still waiting for the "high level employment" type development that's been promised there for years.
The factory is actually pretty ugly. It's really just a big brick box. Just because it's old doesn't mean it's an architectural landmark. For that, you only need to cross the street and walk West. Those are beautiful buildings. Sadly underutilized by tennants, (the city for one) that have no need to occupy such a space.
Has anyone heard any update on the Weston Bakery development? I am curious to know what is the status of the application and if there is an expected construction start date. I haven't seen anything news on this recently!
I haven't heard anything either! I've heard a few conflicting things from neighbours but haven't had any official news in a year.
