I'm new to Leslieville, but grew up not far from the Bloor Cinema...

So, I don't know much about the history of the Gerrard Cinema and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about whether the owners might consider showing some other movies in addition to what they're currently showing.

I'd be game to join with some others and put together some kind of a "proposal" if there's interest and the possibility of a positive reception...

It does seem like a rep. theatre can be a wonderful part of a great neighbourhood!

Great idea!  What about a weekly Bollywood night - a classic film with English subtitles?  Little India restaurants could get involved and offer a meal & movie special.  Or a monthly rep festival of some sort (anime one month, local documentaries another, Ryerson film student features another, etc.)?  It's cool that the theatre shows Tamil films, and fitting for the neighborhood, but it would be great to make use of the space on nights when the regular schedule is not running.

I've met with the owner and projectionist to discuss maybe doing a series. He was open to the idea, and it's not expensive.

However, I'd recommend going in and seeing a film to get a feel for the place.

Note that the theatre has two 35mm projectors, only one of which has Dolby sound capabilities. What they do is show the

first half, then go to an "intermission" short, during which time the projectionist loads the second reel, then back to the remainder of the film. There is no digital projection.

I encourage anyone to take a shot at this.... just to see if the community would come out for it.

I would!

So I was chatting with Euan Moat who owns Grinder and he's interested in having a discussion about the possibilities for the theatre (looks like he may start doing concession for the theatre).  He's willing to have interested people meet at Grinder (after hours if need be) to chat.  Shall we gather up interested people and meet?

There's a rep theatre in Roncesvalles that has a monthly documentary screening, where local amateur doc makers get to screen their films.   I went to see a friend's film and it was packed (with friends of other film makers... but I'm sure people from the neighbourhood too).   And after the screenings, most people went to one of the local pubs/bars for a drink.   Nice cash infusion for the neighbourhood, especially if done on a slow night.
I think it sounds like a great idea.
Count me in for the meeting. I would love, (not really...maybe) don an ushers uniform again. I miss the buildings that housed the theaters I worked as a teenager. The Hollywood, Uptown, University, Golden Mile, Plaza... sad to see them go. I'd be happy to help preserve what is left.
I think this is a terrific idea and would love to come to the meeting.  Have just moved to Leslieville and love films.

Gerrard Cinema meeting details:

Monday April 4 folks interested in the possibilities for the Gerrard Cinema will be gathering.  We'll meet at Grinder (1021 Gerrard East) at 7pm.  The owner of the Gerrard Cinema will be there as will the owner of Grinder.

Come one, come all!

Ever had a great idea for a film festival?

Friendly reminder that on Monday April 4th there will be a gathering of people who are interested in exploring possibilities for the Gerrard Cinema (1035 Gerrard).  We'll be meeting at the Grinder Cafe (1021 Gerrard) at 7pm.The owner of the Gerrard Cinema will be there.

Bring your ideas! All welcome...

hi jg - may I suggest you add the April 4 meeting to the 'events' section? Maybe it'll pop up on some LVers' front page as we get closer to the day.

(count me and my husband in to be there, btw)

Great idea! I just posted an announcement...

Also, here's a link that has a little history about the Gerrard Cinema:
