Hi all,

I am considering a move to a place just north of Gerrard, on a dead end street bound by the train tracks to the north (the house is quite close to the dead end, and therefore the rail line).  Just wondering if anyone on this board lives on one of the streets in this area (Highfield, Woodfield, Hiawatha, Ashdale, Craven, Rhodes) between Gerrard and the tracks, and if the train noise is noticeble and bothersome to you inside your home.  Also, are these tracks just for the GO trains, or is there regular freight traffic on the line as well?  Do the trains run all night?  Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
-D

Hi Darryn. I live two blocks from the tracks, south of Gerrard. I hear them, but you get used to them. Freight does go through, but it's mostly GO and VIA trains. I'm not sure about your location, but there are homeless people near where I live, and they seem to stay on the rail lands close to me, so we get the majority of train horns.

I have met people that live on Jimmie Simpson Park, so the trains are like right there in their face. I've not heard anybody complain. In fact I've never heard anybody complain.

Ironically as I type this, sirens from the fire station on Gerrard & Carlaw are going past somewhere close. I hear those things much more often, and they are noticeable, whereas the trains just blend in.
I have lived down at 25 The Esplanade, facing on to train yards, and 360 Bloor East, a half-block from the fire/ambulance station that served St. James town.
I found both of them disruptive, and couldn't sleep with the windows open at either place. I could almost get used to the sirens, but could never get used to the low-frequency hum of freight trains moving slowly through at 4am.

I moved to Leslieville, and slept with the windows open. Was awakened the first morning at about 4am, and wondered what the heck the noise was I was hearing... Oh yeah. Springtime. It's birds :-)

Depends on what bothers you and what your thresholds are.

i was wondering the same thing. Could anyone on booth ave (north of queen) please give their take on "train noise"?. Thanks very much
We're on Booth (very close to the trains) and are not bothered them. You do hear them but we have never been woken up by them. However we have never tried sleeping with the windows open - I think with the windows open at night they might disturb your sleep. We would much rather have the trains (and therefore the park) than houses across from us.
We are on Booth close to the trains as well and they are not an issue for us whatsoever as regards sleep disruption.  Quite the contrary, we really like seeing them go by at night, and even with windows open in the summer its never been an issue for us.

I'm on Wardell Street - can't really get any closr to the train tracks.  The train nose was one of my primary concerns when I bought the house 5 years ago.  Honestly, unless I have the door open, I don't notice them at all - I never have.  They  are only via and go trains.  I'd take the train noise over being close to the streetcar tracks on Queen or Gerrard.

I'm on De Grassi near the trains. I was concerned about noise when we purchased our home too. I honestly only hear about 1 per day -- the rest of the time it just doesn't register. I started tuning them out within my first week of living there.

If you're trying to have a conversation with a neighbour on the street when a train is passing, you may have to pause your conversation briefly due to noise. That's the biggest "inconvenience".

The majority of the trains are GO, with the odd Via train. They seem to stop the trains overnight between 12/1 am and 5 am ish (later on weekends.)
