I had not been to this restaurant for sometime, however during the holiday season, with my lack of wanting to eat one more turkey leftover meal, I decided to wander to this local restaurant with my partner and good friends.
Well I was pleasantly surprised by a number of things. First the food extremelly good, well cooked and presented , and staff very friendly. Atmosphere was the thing that surprised me most. It has changed. I had always perceived this as being a bit boring or stuffy, but was pleasantly surprised by what had changed. Who knows maybe because it was busy so there was a bit of a buzz, but they were playing great music, and just all round good feeling....
I had the steak / frites, and the steak could have been cut with a butter knife it was so tender. Frites were excellent. As was the chocolate desert and the appetizer. One of us had the roasted chicken, and he was thoroughly enjoying that.
So what I can say is that their wine list , although good, is a bit pricey which tended to bump up the meal which was a Prix Fixe.....so be careful and dont' be fooled by that prix fixe....I think a slight decline in the price of the wine, and we would have both a great restaurant serving great food at a reasonable price.
THE ANDRE STARS - 4
(5 BEING THE TOP OF COURSE....;-)
Hey Andre.... haven't been to Fare for a while but this makes me want to go back. Thanks for the review. And double thanks for implementing the Andre Star system! I think I will use it, with permission, of course. :)
We went to Fare last night, and want to second your comments above. We both had the prix fixe. The other half had his usual steak frites, and I had the roast boneless chicken. Both entrees were very good. The dessert, especially the creme brulee, was fabulous.
I think what I liked most was the simple quality of the food - it is good, straightforward food that is well prepared. Oh, and they made a perfect martini too!
Fare is one of my favourite restaurants in this neighborhood. Brad, and Beata the owners always make you feel right at home. Their waitstaff are always professional and sweet.
The food is ALWAYS delicious. I was never a fan of duck - always found it too gamey, but Brad does such a beautiful job with it, that its one of my favourite dishes now.
Their homemade brioche served with duck confit melts in your mouth. His sauces are so divine. The way they make their steaks, be it mignon, or strip, far exceeds any steak house in this city. I think the key there is quality of cut and perfect preparation. Fare has never disappointed.
Fare is a total gem!
We went there for dinner last weekend and the ambiance, service and food far exceeded our expectations. We've just moved into the 'hood and are making our rounds to try and support the restaurants and a colleague recommended Fare. It was fantastic - I am shocked this bistro doesn't get more well-deserved buzz!!?
