I am wondering what people in Leslieville are using as their internet provider? I'm currently using Rogers but I'd to see what others are using. I have to upload lots files for clients and I'm constantly going over my quota with Rogers. I'm also curious what neighbourhoods are using what service, as it seems to impact performance. I'm looking for something that allows more that 100GB/month.

Thanks!

Ah but you will be needing one of these in order for Tomato to work:

I do not have one of them there.  Oh well.  I've had years of horror stories with routers in the past.  Use with caution, and make sure you have original firmware for your router before you go ahead and re-flash anything.

What's interesting is that we live right beside one of the largest communications trunks in North America.  The railway is where backbone fibre travels across Canada.  They all go into 151 Front Street West, which is the most communicated building in Canada.

When I bought down here, I was hoping for fibre in the hood.  In fact, with the Port Lands having all that potential, they will indeed fibre the brains out of it.  We might get some benefit from that, if we ask for it.  The Pan-Am site is all fibre'd up as well.  Fibre is so much more reliable and much quicker.

I've got the Linksys router.  It really isn't that complicated and not much more risky than updating any other firmware on a device.  I think it is worth investing in a one time purchase for years of uncapped bandwidth and convenient remote login to the router itself.  DSL is also slightly cheaper than a similar cable package.
Remote login is a risk if you have sensitive info on the inside.  I also serve behind a fixed IP.  It's one of the reasons I don't use a Linksys at the moment.  Haven't for years.  Their firmware has been horrible in the past, before Cisco bought them.  I bought a multi-source professional router since then, and operate on an Apple which seems to be flaky after managing it a lot.  Another problem with flashing is that you can render some routers useless if the image isn't fully flashed.  There is no reset because there is a partial OS for the unit.  I'm fixed to DSL because of that static IP as well.  Oh well, it works for me.
The remote access is to the router; not the network.  And Tomato effectively replaces the horrible firmware.  =)  I just want to reassure people that it isn't scary and with a bit of work and perhaps help from a geeky friend it is pretty simple to set up and maintain.  I'm not a computer expert by any means and I use it just fine with some help.

Remote means WAN, not LAN.  WAN is a security risk.  So is LAN if your wireless is turned on with certain types of ciphers.

It's something to pay attention to while you are doing it, that's all.  Maybe it might actually be better than Linksys' firmware.  I have a router here that's older, that has no real working OS for it.  It's fun to play with.  A door stop.

Wow. Wasn't expecting all this interesting info. Thanks guys. As soon as I get back from India in a month, I will check out these options.

India?????  Take me with you.  I'll set up your router!  Hehe.
LOL. I'm already here shooting a small feature film. You can see another that we shot here from 2006 called Amal that someone posted on YouTube.

Well done on the films.  Bring me back a Lamb Dhansak, or a Beef Biriyani.  I'm not sure if they would have a beef one though.  A friend of mine from Kerala said he really loved Ontario pork.
