Its dark out.  Our doorbell rings.  I go to the door and see some guy.  Through the door he tells me he's here to read our gas tank.  I say, "at this hour?"  He shows me some badge that says "National" on it (our gas company is Enbridge) and he says, "I'm here till 9:00, I'm checking all the houses in the neighborhood.  I tell him, "Not this house".  He repeats that he's from the gas company.  I tell him to go away and I back away from the door.  He says, "What are you, scared??"

I called the police.  They said it sounded sketchy, that of course I did the right thing by not opening the door.  They told me about some scam the gas companies run..something about a switcharoo...but I'm much more worried about a home invasion!  At any rate...it freaks me out.  The police told me to call the company, "National" and complain, but we can't find a company called "National".

Anyone else see this guy?

Yes he's all over the place. Check out the other thread.

Can someone take a picture of this lunatic, or get the number of his company? And it is either a scam or he's scouting out people's homes.
Here is the way I see it.... If your gas company needs to see your furnace or what have you they would call you and make an appt! You know the stupid appt that have a window of 8am to 2pm or such! lol and Further more if your interested in looking for a different gas company go on line and look etc. You should not answer the door and chat to some stranger about your bills etc nor should you let them in because its cold!.

There are a couple legitament companies that will send people door to door but that is very limited now so I suggest just dont bother, if your really curious they can leave information for you in your mail box and you can phone the company and make a schedualled appt.
In this day and age, nobody should be sending people to your door. With Internet and direct mail (paid direct mail, not this pamphlet junk) they can either request some time with you or for you to hit a website. I deliberately put a message on my door to have nobody knock at it.

I can't wait for him to knock on mine, thinking he's legit. We'll have our picture, unless my video camera gets back from service.
I had two guys come to my door 2 nights ago, about an hour apart - both were from the same company. Found them online: http://www.nationalhomeservices.ca/about_us.html. Guys didn't seem overly shady to me - just looked like normal 20-30 year olds. They each asked to see my water tank, I told them that it was brand new, and I was happy with it. They said, okay, thanks have a good night.

I'm a pretty "on guard" person, and while I don't think that these guys were up to anything dastardly, just do a google search on "National Home Service scam". It's not the first company I've encountered doing this door to door stuff (Summit Energy in November) since we moved into the neighbourhood in August, and definitely not the last. As with anything, it's buyer beware.
I still don't think that is necessary information. Any information about your home is nobody's business but yours. A cabbie once asked me how much the houses in the neighbourhood were. I thought he might be assessing what's inside the homes, so I told him I didn't know. I also said they do have a bunch of security in them and that some cops lived around here, so they must support that kind of wage. I also cut that kind of bother off at the very beginning by indicating I don't want anybody at my door. My home is a very special place for me, and I think I'd have some fun words for some kid showing up telling me he has to read my water tank.
I think the most unsettling part of the scenario for Tara and me the other night was when the guy flippantly said "What are you, scared?!" through the door. Not really a great way to establish rapport with someone you're trying to do business with when you've shown up at their door, unexpected, after dark.

Which is probably why they're going door to door in the first place. I totally agree, it's creepy. Now that man is down the street at that little old lady's house. Meanwhile, there's rapists and people assaulting other people in the neighbourhood. I don't mind getting aggressive with these people at all.

Asked to see the water tank? One of those guys knocked on my door the other night and I opened against my better judgement and itnerrupted him before he got to that and pointed to our "No Soliciting" sign. He said "I'm not soliciting!". I said, "Of course you are!" as I shut the door. He left.

I'd like to think nobody would be foolish enough to let a total stranger into their house, but I guess it's possible. Even I answered the door and aside from the dog and cats I was home alone.
I had two guys come,
I didn't let them in, I think they are trying to 'trick' you into switching your water heater and then you are automatically under contract with them and who knows what their rates are, cancellation costs etc....their company is a legitimate supplier in the east end, but they don't seem to have a good business sense.
I had the Direct Energy guy come by just the other day. He was really nice, and whether it's right that Direct Energy sends these guys out without appointments is right or not, he's just doing his job. Right now, they are doing an energy efficiency blitz. They just installed a new one in my house without any problems.
We had these guys come to our house, they acted surprised that I wouldn't let in, and tried, it honestly seemed to insinuate that I was obligated too. They also claimed that they were not trying to sell anything. They were very unprofessional in their manorisms, which blew their cover right there. What a lame thing!
Jeremy, DirectEnergy doesn't solicit door to door, and they don't send out people without an appointment. Actually, they make sure to give a reminder of this every time I'm on the phone with them.
