Gotta disconnect it, or apply for an exemption from the City. Of course the Worklofts, Flatiron Lofts, and The Carlaw all have runoff directly into the storm water drainage system.
Cheers
Permalink Reply by Avery on November 17, 2011 at 11:00am I'm going to try and apply for an exemption. If we run our downspout into our front yard, it slopes back towards the house, and also down towards my neighbour's house.
I bet I won't get the exemption - they'll probably tell me to regrade or something like that. But it's worth a try, and it might buy me some time until I find a solution.
I wonder what the fine will be for those that don't comply...
Permalink Reply by Egg Flik on November 17, 2011 at 12:40pm House foundations is probably the primary challenger for a lot of this. Weeping tiles essentially are doing the same thing. So that might be an option that you can probably handle on your own. In fact, depending on how forceful the City will be, this might be a handyman's business plan for the next number of summers. Finding solutions to this might be a great way of earning a living.
Re-setting angles on rooftop drainage might also help to take it to the back of the house, etc. But getting it to the back yard might be a challenge. I'm no expert in this. Our situation is impossible to detach the downspouts. I worry though, as it's the City. They aren't the best at...really anything.
Fines...not sure. Something manageable. I think it's the only way they can really push for reducing stress on an aging system. Funny how we get fined for this type of stuff, yet the 905'ers get their sidewalk snow cleared for them.
Permalink Reply by Avery on November 17, 2011 at 6:25pm Keep us all updated as you try and get an exemption. I'm not usually a "stick my head in the sand" kind of person, but part of me kind of hopes our case gets tied up in some red tape forever, and then we won't have to do anything.
905'ers getting their sidewalk snow cleared? Hell, even some 416'ers do. Doesn't Rob Ford get his sidewalk cleared for him in Etobicoke?
Sigh.
Permalink Reply by Egg Flik on November 17, 2011 at 6:51pm Well, our situation is a bit complicated. It's not just our house.
With regards to snow removal, with the current push to save money, things should be universal. There's one thing I have found happening, is that the downtown is taking the hit for service reductions. I guess the 905s want downtown to be their parking lot for jobs and shopping, and highways to get in and out. Honestly, if it continues this way, de-amalgamation will happen, and 416 will have moat built around it with tolls coming into the City, a very different TTC that could function with a profit, and pressure upon City Hall to function as a City, not like this: 311 Service Problems
