Has anybody had any experiences with tutoring schools (kumon, etc ) in Leslieville? Or can someone recommend a math tutor?

Hello Heidi

There are two free math tutoring services available to TDSB students:

Math Coach — One-to-One Math Assistance During the School Day for Students

Tim Millan, a TDSB mathematics teacher, is online and waiting to help grade 7-10 math students with their math problems, Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Direct link:  http://tdsb.adobeconnect.com/mathcoach.

Click on Enter as a Guest. Type in your first name followed by your school’s name (e.g. Alex, Jarvis).  Click on Enter Room. You’re in!

Homework Help — One-to-One Math Tutoring in the Evenings for Students

In the evenings, grade 7, 8, 9 and 10 students can receive math support at Homework Help. On-line real time math tutors are available Sunday to Thursday, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Direct link: http://homeworkhelp.ilc.org.

To register students require their OEN (which can be found on their report card) and an email address.

I used to tutor for Kumon ages ago.  I would recommend it for students that just need a bit of extra repetition (the whole program is pretty much just repetition).  I don't think it is the right approach for a child that is seriously behind because it doesn't offer much one on one time with a tutor.

I recently read about a new program for math called JUMP that is getting some attention: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/18/a-better-way-to-tea....  Your child's resource department at school might even offer it.

Hi Heidi - if you are having issues I am Gr 6 teacher in Riverdale with experience tutoring middle to high school students and could give help.

Hi James;

What's the best way to get in touch with you?
