Permalink Reply by smiley on August 31, 2011 at 1:55pm I can't even believe the city would consider pulling such a move after 10 years and $492M of federal money have already gone into the project. You can't just rush development of land like that just because you feel like it.
I mean a ferris wheel? Why would you want to turn it into a tourist attraction?? Newflash! Most Londoners don't ride on the eye! Doug Ford's idea essentially amounts to taking the most beautiful piece of real estate in the city which ALREADY has one of the best views of the city and turning it into something that the people who actually live IN THE CITY won't use.
I can't believe someone who thinks about an idea like this for more than two seconds without laughing and shrugging it off is in a position of power. Now we're probably going to waste more time fighting off the egomaniacs that want to turn it into an amusement park instead of continuing with the good work that's been going on in that area for a decade.
Argh!
Permalink Reply by Pat on September 1, 2011 at 10:30pm Unfortunately, I couldn't attend. Did you go, Michael?
I was intending to, packed my bags, was on my way out the door about 6:15 and then something came up I had to take care of.:(
I'll post something here tomorrow if I hear any news from anyone who went.
Permalink Reply by smiley on September 21, 2011 at 8:28am Thank goodness it looks like this crackpot scheme has been duly flushed down the toilet. Thanks to Councillor Paula Fletcher for spearheading the "resistance" and to everyone who signed petitions and wrote to their Councillors. As was just mentioned on the Metro Morning interview with Councillor Fletcher, the whole fiasco may have increased public awareness of the project and will hopefully lead to even greater public engagement in the future.
