I was bummed to hear this weekend that they are closing within the month. Sounds like their rent was jacked up too much.

I wonder if they had the same landlord as Tomi Kro, Toast, and Sophie? Seems odd that so many good places are shutting down or moving out of the neighborhood in a short space of time.
Permalink Reply by Greig on November 21, 2011 at 3:43pm That's pretty crappy. The only reason the landlord can ask so much for rent is because the Red Rocket proved you could run a viable business in a marginal space (semi-underground). Victims of their own success, I guess.
Permalink Reply by Chris B on November 21, 2011 at 4:14pm I guess we'll see if the landlord is rewarded for his greed. As Greig pointed out, its not exactly prime frontage. In fact, its more a credit to RR that they've been able to make a go of it so long, especially since they were there long before QMP or 10 Spot, and so were the only ones driving traffic to that building.
Given the recent departures of Tomi-Kro, Toast and Sophie, there would seem to be some prime Leslieville store front available (especially when you add in that space adjacent to Mercury which has been vacant for almost 4 years). Might be getting time for those landlords to think more about ensuring good stable tenants than trying to charge the highest rent they can get away with.
Permalink Reply by Gwen on November 21, 2011 at 11:19pm Yes, my partner told me that Red rocket is closing. Such a very cool place. SO disappointed.
Permalink Reply by Gwen on November 21, 2011 at 11:20pm Red Rocket belongs in Leslieville, not the Danforth!

Permalink Reply by Andre Gratton on November 29, 2011 at 7:10pm agree greedy landlord will have empty space to deal with. As for the move there are several other locations on Queen between Jones and the tracks that could have accommodated. That's too bad to see them go.
