We dropped into this little spot just around the corner from Celine Gardens on Carlaw the other day for lunch.  Before it opened we had wandered by and got excited looking at the posted menu in the window - it looked like they were serving up some Austrian/German fare like goulash, schnizel, etc.  So when we finally got there it was quite dissapointing to see that the menu had been revised to just have some rather standard breakfast items, sandwiches, and desserts (they still had schnitzel).

I ordered the schnitzel plate and my husband had the roast beef sandwich.  The coffee is self serve at the coffee bar.  To say it was dissapointing is being kind.  My schnitzel was rock hard and tasteless, and the sandwich, while good, was tiny and expensive.  We got a piece of apple strudel to go (hoping it would redeem the place) but it too was dissapointing with soggy pastry and a tasteless filling.

The service was also terrible.  Extremely slow.

I was really hoping for better.  :(

This is a helpful review. Thanks.
I picked a sandwich and a coffee there a few days ago. I've got no complaints. Attractive space.
I completely disagree, with all of this! They actually have quite wonderful service and the food is fairly priced and from my experiences there is a generous serving size. They do have an espresso bar, and although they don't make as good a cup as Mercury, they do make a damn fine americano. I've had their pesto pasta, their homemade soups and tomato basil sandwich; all of which were great.

If you need something in the morning, their Oatmeal Cake is homemade like everything else and is delicious!
I like the place too. Barbara the owner is a lovely person. I enjoy their veggie lasagna!

Just like people, businesses have good and bad days. You can't judge a business by a single interaction.

It's easy to be a critic. Please try to be fair...these businesses are not run by faceless giant corporations.

I'm not sure what's unfair about posting a negative experience. It wasn't malicious or hurtful. It was a customer's opinion of the experience they had in exchange for they money they paid. Personally, I appreciate both positive and negative reviews so long as they're honest. That's the whole point of reviews, isn't it?

Being a small business shouldn't exempt you from criticism any more than being a big business should exempt you from the expectation of good customer service.

I was there yesterday and noticed they have a really cozy fireplace now - along with a different menu.

agree!  I'd rather hear the positive AND the negative.  Hearing 1 negative review wouldnt' turn me off of a place, but I would be suspicious of ALL good reviews.

I loved my visit to the Cafe - great time, service, food and atmosphere at a reasonable price.  I hope they stay in the neighbourhood because I want to keep going back.  glad to hear there is a fireplace - can't wait.
Has anyone had brunch at River Rock Cafe?  Would love to hear what it's like.  They are listed as one of the brunch spots on Urban Spoon.  Thanks!

I finally went here a few times and enjoyed it.  The schintzel is a bit lost on a bun but is quite good with something on the side instead.  I've also had their pesto pasta, roast beef sandwich and strawberry/banana cake and they were all good.  The roast beef sandwich is probably the best thing I've tried.

Given how awful Tim Horton's sandwiches are for only a bit less, I'd say the menu items are fairly priced.

Since I starter working at home, I've gone over to River Rock many times to grab lunch. (They're right behind my house.) I've really taken a shine to the place. Lots of stuff at very fair price. I really like the sandwiches and the soups.

Leslieville Local Business Marketing - 10 ways to use TheLeslieviller.com

When I launched this site in early 2009, one of the compelling reasons for doing so was that I was struck by how many of the businesses in Leslieville are locally owned and operated.  Another big observation was (and still is) how proud most…
