Hello:

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for tattoo shops and particular artists in the Leslieville area. I'm looking to finally get a couple of small tattoos, one on my bicep and one on my wrist.

Thanks!

Well my wife and I were walking by the tattoo and ink supply shops between Carlaw and Logan last week.  We were just aimlessly walking around and all of sudden we found ourselves within touching distance of about 7 cops that were creeping towards the ink supply shop with machine guns drawn and a battering "ram."  As they yelled "POLICE!" and busted down the door, we took off running.  My wife screamed and literally ran, pushing a stroller, all the way to Eastern :)  I'm still making fun of her a bit for that one.  She just wouldn't stop running.

Maybe stay away from those 2 for now?

Corey, who owns/runs the tattoo shop is a nice guy and has been a good member of the community. He graduated from Morse Street School and always donates to our fundraising efforts. The people I know who've chosen to get tattoos and piercings there from his donations of gift certificates are happy with them. It's a shame his business will suffer because of the activity next door. For the dozen years we've lived here, on the block behind, there's never been a noticeable problem for residents until now. Though slightly unsavoury things happened in the laneway behind the supply shop from time to time, that's no different than a lot of other places up and down Queen. I would be sad to see part of the neighbourhood's character, and a long-time businesst, disappear in favour of another Flight Center, gewgaw store or froufy restaurant.

The owner of the buildings is apparently not a bad guy either, according to a thread on the FB page "I am a Leslievillian!" The problem was with the son of the owner, as I've heard from those in the know. In the supply shop next door, there was a stash of unregistered (and over-the-top) guns, bulletproof vests and money;  and there was an altercation earlier that day. Here is a link to the article from that night: http://m.citynews.ca/news/210492/index.php  and here is the link to the FB page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/2253273170/

The event happened during our school's fun fair, and unless you were coming from that direction, nobody knew about it until it was over. It was handled very well by the police and SWAT team, and the officers who visited the school (as they would normally during our event for community outreach) were reassuring. My husband and his bandmate, who were coming to play our event, were simply re-directed to go down Carlaw from Verral before the team was in place, instead of being allowed to cross at Morse - I'm surprised you were that close. It was lousy timing, partly because normally the tattoo shop guys would be invited to enjoy the fun fair and eat complimentary hamburgers and hot dogs. I believe it's a case of one bad apple - don't let it spoil the bunch.

Thanks Marla.  We actually were walking to the fun fair and I can't believe we got that close either.  No one stopped us but I did notice, once I realized we had ended up in the middle of an episode of "Cops", that no one else was around except for us.  It was a surreal experience, and of course a scary one, as I was carrying our 2 yr old and my wife was pushing a 5 day old.  A cop did come and help us after we started freaking out a bit but this was after they busted down the door, etc.

I probably shouldn't have put the tattoo shop into the same boat as the supply shop next door.  Apologies for that.

Yes, the two are very much different businesses. Word on the street is that the cops retrieved 61 guns from the supply shop!!!

Thanks for all your feedback. I'll be popping into there in a couple of weeks and get some estimates done.

Thanks again!
