Sux. Although, I must confess, I keep waiting for that shoe to drop with all the free social services. If they're not monetizing the service through advertising, what is the business plan? How are they going to finance growth?
That's very disappointing. I love coming to this site to see what's going on in the 'hood, and I've met some great people here. I wonder how much Ning would charge to keep it going.
I suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world to add is as a group on facebook or something. We could still have discussions and events and photos. Pretty much everything we have here.
Actually, although TheLeslieviller.com is free for its members to use, it is not one of the free-service Ning networks. The Leslieviller uses a number of Ning's paid features, and is considered one of the paid-service networks that Ning refers to in its announcement as generating 75% of its total network traffic. In fact, with nearly 1,000 registered members plus thousands of non-member visitors every month, TheLeslieviller.com is one of the bigger local community social networks in operation today.

When I created this site, turning on some of the premium paid features was key to offering the kind of site experience I wanted to bring to the community. I decided to cover those costs out of my own pocket, partly chalking it up to being the cost of my experiment, and partly in anticipation of eventually having enough members and site traffic to attract local businesses as advertisers. I'm happy to report that in the past few months, the site has started to become cash flow positive.

So thanks to all of the active members, and a few very innovative local business owners beginning to advertise on the site, The Leslieviller is in no risk of being shut down. In fact, as an owner/operator of a paid-service Ning network, I'm very excited about their recent announcement to focus the company's resources on improving the platform and features that will be available to us.

Glad you asked though, Kelly. I've not talked much about the financial model of The Leslieviller, so this was a good opportunity to bring folks up to speed.

Please continue to enjoy the site, and be sure to support the local businesses who are paying to advertise here so that we can continue to operate without cost to the site members!

Cool. Thanks ever so much, Nolin.
You da man! Thanks!

That's great news Nolin. I really love this site and very much appreciate all the hard work you've put into it to create an online community for all us Leslievillers.
My thoughts exactly :)

It's probably the best model anyway.
I'll add my thanks to Nolin and everyone else giving their time and other resources to keep this site running!
