Rob Ford was not popular in Ward 30.  Smitherman was the clear winner here.

From the Torontoist: Mayoral vote count.

Ward 30, Toronto-Danforth
Rob Ford: 5,106 (25.8%)
George Smitherman: 10,492 (53.0%)
Joe Pantalone: 3,341 (16.9%)

From what I heard in the media (haven't looked at the numbers), that was the case with most ridings south of Eglinton. The overall voter turnout in the downtown core was just far less than the outer ring of Toronto, where Ford was the popular choice.
Even better is this image, which a commenter on the torontoist website put together, overlaying the subway map with the voting map. http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3391/mayoralelectionbywardsu.jpg
no surprise there - the old burbs supporting the more right wing candidate.
According to the analysts I was watching, the surprise was not the fact that former suburbanites supported the right, it was that for the first time since amalgamation their voter turnout vastly outpaced old Toronto. Revenge of the former suburbs, i think they dubbed it.
