Can anyone reccomend a reputable company to replace a few windows and a back exterior door in a Victorian home?  We've been to the usual suspects (Home Depot, Loews etc)  and tried to do business with the local (on Queen E.) -- neither option is suitable.

Hey Trish - I've had pretty god luck with LDT Aluminum Window & Door (don't be fooled by the name - they offer more than just aluminum).  They may not suit your needs if you are looking for something super fancy, but their stuff is pretty good and well-priced and they are local. 1275 Gerrard E, 416-465-5388.

I highly recommend Brock Windows. They won in their category two years in a row on HomeStars and they've done a great job for us. A few years ago we did all the main floor windows and this spring we replaced all the windows on the second floor. I got quotes from Sears & Home Depot - both of which were doing window specials at the time we wanted to purchase and their quotes were MUCH higher than Brock (like $2-$3K more). And Brock's windows are made right here in Canada!

The sales person we dealt with both times is Kevin Howatt. He's super friendly and very accommodating.

His number is: 416 324 2604.

The installers spent an entire day here doing the second story and they were very professional and kept things tidy around the house and they did a great job cleaning up.

Honestly - these guys are awesome. I can't recommend them enough!

Thanks for the info, neighbours.  Great to have the local 'thumbs ups'! :)
Consumer Windows and Doors are the folks I used for all the windows and doors at my house on Coady Avenue.  You can come by and take a look at 91 Coady.  They did good work, love the windows, saves alot of money on heating and cooling in the winter....was the best investment.

Hi Lisa -- I did call Brock and they put me on to someone (not Kevin).  It was a wierd call.  The sales guy insisted my partner be home when he came to do the estimate so that he wouldn't have to make another callback.  I found it kind of insulting and frankly none of their business in terms of how we make decisions.   Not sure if we will proceed with them.  Just thought you should know.

wow - that is weird. they generally get such good ratings on homestars etc that this is surprising.

you could always try to call Kevin directly: 416 324 2604?

I know - I was totally taken aback.  But oddly, another company I called also danced around the "will your husband be there" question.   Must have something to do with getting burned when 'the little woman' is overruled on buying windows.... Yikes - welcome to the 1950s.

so odd! i didn't have any problems with any of the places that I called. I mean, they give you a written quote so what's the big deal, you'll obviously share the info with your partner when you can.

the only person that i've had issue with in the past was the owner of Asselin Roofing. He's quite condescending to women.

yep..... a couple were great -- no muss, no fuss, here's your written estimate.  And then a couple lacked the level of professionalism required.

We've dealt with lots of tradespeople over the years and only a handful have been seeking the "Leave it to Beaver" household.  Very off putting when it happens though.  Had a carpenter once actually call me "Little Lady"  --  oddly, he is still alive to tell the tale :)

I had the same thing happen, we are looking for windows, the person we called inquired if both of us would be here for the estimate, I think they want the couple there because it's a big item purchase and with the couple there, maybe time is saved as one partner does't always have to relay info to the other which speeds things up.

As a contractor myself, I've learned that the female head of the house makes the decisions 95% of the time. I much prefer dealing with women. Not that I dislike the men, but a lot of their beliefs about construction are held over from their youth when they built a picnic table with their father. Not everything is a simple as a picnic table :)

We had our front door and one window replaced by a lovely guy, Matti Posti. He is not from Leslieville, but has done 4 or 5 houses in the neighbourhood. His number is 416.878.4568. Good luck!
