Gertie was stolen from outside Gerrard Mall at Pape and Gerrard Street Saturday June 16. Security cameras show her being walked away by a heavy man in his late 20's/early 30's also walking with his bicycle. She is tan with black markings, approx 15 pound, wearing a collar and tags. Please cross post and call Anna at 416-461-3688 if you have any information. Welsh Terriers are not a common breed so if someone has her she should be easy to spot. Thank you.

I'm so tired of this happening. Every day I see adorable/valuable-looking dogs with their leashes just looped casually around a bike pole or a light standard, no owner in sight. The other day I was about to go into the Loblaws at Maple Leaf Gardens and saw a beautiful little Cairn terrier tied up outside. I wasn't in a hurry so decided I would wait for the owner to come back.
I stood there, about ten feet away, for 20 minutes. In that time, six people stopped to play with the dog. More ominously, a car pulled up alongside and a man got out of the passenger side. He walked over to the doors of the store and paced back and forth, glancing between the dog and me, half-smiling. After a few minutes he got back into the car and they drove away.
When the owner finally appeared with her groceries, I told her what had happened and asked her to please not leave her beloved friend unattended any more. She was startled: it had never even occurred to her anyone would try to take him.
Last night going by the same store on the streetcar, I saw a beautiful purebred boxer looped to the same fence. Why don't people think? If you can't bring your pet into a store with you, leave him at home and go back to the store later.
I'm very sorry for the owners but it's just not a safe thing to do at all.

Good for you for talking to the woman at the store.
The police have been notified and I am trying to get a picture of the guy from the CCTV recording. Gertie is very much loved, my husband is her groomer and he knows just how much she is cared for. Gertie's parents were too trusting of people and they are now suffering for their mistake.
We also have a Welsh Terrier, and other than my Bonnie, Oscar and Chico I have not seen other Welshes in the neighbourhood. If you see one stop the person and get info on the dog. I am hoping to be stopped often when I walk Bonnie, it will mean people are looking. This is how Rex was found a couple weeks ago, someone saw him in a poster and saw a man carrying him into a store. He was safely returned.
I was unable to upload a photo, please check the link to see what she looks like. I can also send a poster to print for anyone that would like to put one up.

I'm absolutely not condemning Gertie's people for being too trusting: it's a hard, hard lesson for them to learn. I hope so much that she's returned to her family soon and in perfect health.

Might get a few more eyeballs. Antonia Zerbisias has posted it to her own page, and I've seen several other people share her post.
Permalink Reply by Lana MacInnes on June 25, 2012 at 10:41pm Welsh Terriers are much smaller. They look like mini Airedales. We have two Airedales and a Welsh. Bonnie can easily walk under her Airedale brother.

I quite often wait with dogs outside stores to guard them, and to alert their humans to the danger. Sometimes if there is a phone number on the dog's tag I'll call. Usually nobody answers. Although I do try to be polite, it's amazing how irate people get. "I was watching him". Well clearly not because you would have wanted to investigate my checking out the tags, right? And how did you watch the dog, and shop, simultaneously? I totally agree with "biscuit" that dogs should never be taken to a store that won't admit dogs. Leave them at home! Or go with two people so one can wait with the dog. I see this practice as just one step down from leaving dogs in hot cars. Dangerous, cruel, but primarily out of ignorance.
