Hi all,

I've been collecting questions from a lot of new parents in the neighbourhood about finding a nanny and sharing a nanny. Below is a list of questions with some information filled in as answers. Please reply to this with any further answers you can provide.

Many thanks and a special thanks to bumblebees nannies whose website provided some of the information posted.

  1. Where can I find a good nanny?
    • canadiannannies.ca - Apparently ALL nannies are registered on the site, resumes are on line along with bios.  I believe there is a $67 membership fee, but it's well worth it.  Way cheaper than going through an agency.
    • http://www.bumblebeesnannies.com/ - local resource in Leslieville that places nannies
    • Word of mouth, ask nannies working for family/friends
  2. How much should I be paying a live-out nanny?
    • $10.25/hour or more, plus time and a half for hours over 44/week. Expect to pay between $450 and $600/week. CPP and EI contributions are additional.
  3. Is there a different rate depending on number of kids? What if we are sharing a nanny with another family?
  4. What hours can I expect a nanny to work?
    • About 10 hours a day seems to be normal for full-time: 8am – 6pm.
  5. What responsibilities can I expect (child care, cooking, etc.)?
    • a broad range of responsibilities, including just about everything related to your children:playing, entertaining, organizing play dates, sports and activities, cleaning the children’s rooms/bathrooms, toys, homework, cooking for the children and associated kitchen cleanup, children’s laundry.
  6. Do we pay CPP and EI or just cash?
    • Up to you. Recommended that you do pay and keep everything “above board”.
  7. What considerations should I make when thinking about sharing a nanny with another family?
    • should have the same philosophies on parenting, routines, discipline, etc. In most nanny shares, the involved families have one child each.
  8. When should I start looking for a nanny?

Thanks so much Cindy! If anyone is interested in sharing a nanny starting in April, please don"t hesitate to contact me to discuss it further

Hi Cindy, this is a great list - I wish someone made one for me a year ago.  Me and a friend partnered up and found a nanny to share last yeawr...it took some time and we interviewed a number of people.  We found an amazing nanny  (from canadiannannies.ca) that comes to our home and takes care of our toddlers.  I will be more than happy to share insights with anyone interested to hear.  As it happens, our nanny has a few friends that are looking for work in this area.  If any one is interested - please send me an email kminaeva@hotmail.com and I can give more info.
