I thought I would draw attention the the sign that the Roy has in its window. For any Leslieville parents that haven't seen it, I urge you to walk by and read about how "badly behaved children and strollers" are not welcome, since it's an "adult establishment".

Every business owner reserves the right to post such signage, and every parent has the right to choose whether to give their money to businesses like this one.  So, I thought it worth posting on the group for you all to decide.

I for one wouldn't dream of setting foot in the Roy -- not when Ceili Cottage, with its down-to-earth authentic Irish atmosphere complete with people that welcome kids, is right down the street. My husband and I, along with my three-year-old, and all of his less than perfect behaviour, will continue to enjoy ourselves at Ceili -- since they treat us like their neighbours and their family.

I agree... and i am a parent to an eight month old. The Roy is tight for space at the best of times and i could never imagine taking a stroller in there. We too did the car seat at a very young age and the experience was fine. We go to Ceili a lot too at a respectable hour when kids are welcome.. Not every pub has to welcome kids. I know when I go to the pub without my daughter in the late afternoon/evening (once in a blue moon!) I don't want to see or hear kids. I don't think as residents of this great neighbourhood we should start to alienate those establishments who operate such practices as the Roy.

I am the parent of a 4 month old and a huge fan of The Roy. We took our daughter to The Roy in her car seat a few times during her first few weeks of life - when she was easily stowed on a chair and didn't make a noise the entire time she was there. The owners and staff were very accommodating and friendly. We didn't go on a Saturday night - we went midweek when the pub was quiet and we wouldn't be monopolizing space.

Now that our daughter is a older and less likely to sit quietly in her car seat for prolonged periods of time, we visit The Roy only when we can secure a babysitter for the evening. When we are able to manage an evening out without the baby, the last place we want to go is somewhere where there are children.

Personally, I think it is entirely appropriate for a pub with limited space to specify adults and 'well behaved children' only. And I don't think it is necessary for people to "ban" The Roy because of this policy - just enjoy the pub when the kids are not in tow.
I laughed when I saw that sign, it's awesome. I wouldn't actually enjoy my daughter's tantrums or whininess whilst savouring a brew, so I choose to make outings when the family is up for it.

No Strollers, no problem! I lock mine up, easy peasy.

I love The Roy, and will continue going. As for them going out of business....that won't happen, it's a great pub, with great food and great staff!

Of interest with both The Roy and the Ceili Cottage, neither are change table friendly, so that's tricky.
Even The Brow House has a no stroller policy now. A sign says that they love babies, but due to limited space, they do not welcome strollers. I find that kind of annoying. It is handy to go during the day with my five month old...now i have to secure babysitting to get my eyebrows done or carry him there, which is no small feat. My boy is heavy! So looks like I will bushy eyebrows for awhile.

We went to the Roy once when it opened then never again. Great for some people that don't want to be around kids, but we take our business elsewhere now.
My wife and I have been regulars at The Roy since it opened and have spent significant amounts of money there. We are there two or three times a week, and enjoy the food, atmosphere and the friendly owners and staff. We do not enjoy having lunch or dinner with screaming kids running around on the furniture and being ignored by their parents who seem to feel entitled to disrupt an entire business. Perhaps instead of banning strollers in the limited space of the pub (strollers don't seem to eat much), they could simply restrict admission to those over 18? A business is a business.
I think its OK. I mean, not EVERY place in the neighborhood has to be child friendly (ok, ASIDE from Teddy's Bar & Grill, obviously). If I felt like it, I would still go there if I ever had a night out sans Bebe. Just IMO.
As a parent of three young children and a behemoth stroller I am not offended by this at all. I think it is reasonable for people to want a child free environment. There is no shortage of great places to take our kids in the neighbourhood. Having child-free and child-friendly places to go keeps everyone happy. I think the Roy addresses the demographic of the area just fine. Wait until all those new condos fill up Carlaw. There will be plenty of childless folks to spend their disposable income. I don't think they'll be feeling the effects of any lost business from us parents.
I for one am thrilled that I have found the "stop following this discussion" link so that I no longer have to listen to this business about the Roy. It is amazing how people just cant stop complaining about "screaming toddlers". Toddlers are supposed to scream and run and have fun. That is the beauty of being two years old!! The amount of angst over children just being children is really remarkable!! I think we have made the point about the Roy and we should move our discussions on to bigger and betterthings, topics that advance our lives or topics that matter in the world. Those of us that think the Roy's policy sucks will not spend our entertainment dollars there and those of us that cant stand "screaming toddlers" will happily continue to attend the Roy where we can be sure to be safe from toddlers. Please Leslieville...let the Roy story go now!!!!

I've been to the Roy with my 2 year old son and they were very accomodating.  He did make some noise but we were never kicked out or given any dirty looks.  I think it's still a great restaurant/pub if you are to bring your children just as long as you can control them!!!
