Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop people going through my garbage before I put it out for collection?

I just had something taken from the path between my house and my neighbours. It is garbage day so I am assuming someone felt free to walk up to my house and help themselves to what took their fancy. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Kind of off topic, but I just want to vent......It's so annoying when people put their baggies of dog poop in my garbage/recycling bins!!!!! ARGHHHHHHH! Seriously, I do not like dog poo. It smells and it's gross!!!! Why can't people take it to their own garbage or put it in a public bin?!??!?? WHY MINE????? STOP PLEASE!!!!

Taking something that's not garbage is different than taking something that is garbage.

Is the issue bottle pickers are taking bottles out of your recycling bin? (Because honestly, I don't see a problem with them earning a nickel off your trash) Or is it that someone stole something that wasn't garbage at all?

I depend on the street pickers on Gerrard. They took all the old doors I left out when we were renovating (they even asked first). They took an old office chair I didn't want anymore, and they weekly take all my deposit bottles that I don't take back for the deposit. I've never had anyone steal something from my yard that wasn't "garbage", but then I don't leave anything out in the yard that could be stolen.

Make sure you're shredding all personal information and documents before you throw it out, too.

I've seen the bottle collectors often trying to outdo each other by someone will go the day before garbage day and actually walk up on people's pathways looking through recycling bins. If enough people tell them to stop maybe they will? But failing that I would store the bins out of sight if possible (such as in the backyard).
