Kaleidoscope Kids of Toronto is registered charity started in 2007 to provide affordable, accessible and innovative programs to children aged 4 to 12, and leadership opportunities for youth aged 13 to 17, living primarily in the Riverdale, Leslieville and East York communities, although we draw children from Downtown, Scarborough and The Beach as well. We offer three day camps per year (Summer, Winter and March Break) and run after school arts programming two days per week during the school year. Our programs fall into three categories: creative (performing, visual and media arts), health & fitness (sports, games, cooking), and educational (science fun, personal development). We operate out of rented space in the Danforth Church (we are unaffiliated with the church), located on Danforth Avenue, just east of Broadview.
Prior to September 2011, we were known as Broadview Community Youth Group, but changed our name as part of a strategic rebranding process.
Kaleidoscope Kids is looking for members of our community to join our Board of Directors.
We have a 9-person policy-resource Board of Directors to oversee the organization, where the focus is on three areas: strategic planning, policy making and resource development. We’re looking for people from the community who have an appreciation of children’s programming, a passion for helping others, and an ability to help generate resources for the organization. Areas of particular interest are legal, accounting/finance, and marketing/PR. Ideal candidates will live and/or own a business in the community, have knowledge or appreciation of children’s programs, and be able and willing to connect the organization to resources. We are not looking to have endless meetings! Our Board meets formally four times a year, although there is work outside of meetings.
When I launched this site in early 2009, one of the compelling reasons for doing so was that I was struck by how many of the businesses in Leslieville are locally owned and operated. Another big observation was (and still is) how proud most…
