Winkel
1107 Queen St East
Spending time at Winkel is like raiding your favorite Auntie’s attic, especially if that Auntie happens to be hip, tasteful, and likes to have a good laugh.
From it’s lively collection of vintage dishware, to mildly inappropriate greeting cards, Winkel’s stock changes constantly. On any day you may find a wagon wheel table, pretty pink pottery, or lobster claw saltshakers. A set of kitchen chairs hangs on the wall, while further back, a cardboard Roy Rogers waves merrily from his cardboard horse.
Shopping for your favorite boozer? Maybe you’ll score 1950’s coasters embossed with recipes for your favorite cocktail. (It’s never too late to start experimenting with vermouth!).
Know a sporty baby? Perhaps they’d enjoy some crocheted booties, fashioned like hockey skates.
Owner Kari and her sidekick Hubble opened Winkel five years ago. Since then it’s became known for it’s charming tchotchke, and paper products old and new. Collectable calendars and magazines can be found throughout the shop, and the colourful selection of cards cover all manner of occasions and friends – even the ones you don’t like.
So go to shop, to say hello, or just to rub Hub’s belly. He won’t mind. He is pug dog, after all.
Gift Tip: Bald Guy greeting cards
Design Tip: Oil cloth. Those bold patterns are begging to become your new outdoor table cloth.
