The Stubborn Leslieville Gardener

Hello All,

I hope everyone is enjoying their gardens! I have gone a little overboard putting in new perennials over the last few weeks. It is so darn addictive. I think my favourite so far is the white bleeding heart that is now residing in my front yard. I never knew that a white one existed - so much to learn! I also added in the front: purple coneflower, colombine, white japanese anemone, windflower, solomon's seal, lily of the valley, chicks n' hens, asiatic lilies and a red poppy, just to name a few! Yikes. But my second favourite addition is a purple lilac sucker that was growing close to my other one in my back yard. It is starting to bloom and for some reason the flowers are blue instead of purple. I just noticed this today and I find it quite amusing as I also have a second white bleeding heart that was split from one in my mum's garden which is pink. I'm not sure what is going on but two plants changing colour when planted in my front garden is funky. Maybe it has something to do with the soil, who knows.
I don't exactly plan my garden out that much. I tried and I got bored with it. When I was a kid I remember being on a drive with my family out in the country and passing a house that was completely covered in flowers (there was not even a path to walk through it) and from then on I always wanted to have that type of garden when I grew up and had a house. And here I am grown up :) and in my first house and I now realize just how much work trying to achieve that garden is. I am in my first year of creating a full garden (as last was spent on renovating) and it is A LOT of work. Now I know how my parents always had such a beautiful garden growing up (and still do) because they spent so much of their valuable spring and summer weekends maintaining it. I have been dedicating a high amount of time to my garden but only becase I am not working at the moment, and I know that I won't have this much time when I find a full time job. So luckily for now I have the time to appreciate it whenever I want during the day and watch everything growing. I don't have much patience when it comes to waiting for something to bloom, but when it does it is fantastic. The best part for me is when a bud is just about to open and you know that by tomorrow another bit of colour will be added to your garden!

Sounds beautiful! I also added a solomon's seal and a colombine this year - although I'm worried I planted the colombine in a spot that's too shady. We'll have to wait and see. I picked up a bunch of native perennials from Humbers, and I'm really looking forward to seeing things come up this summer.
